Who is Shakira?
Born and raised in the Bronx, Shakira co-owns the studio with her husband Nick and tattoos full days alongside him. Her work spans color, black and grey, fineline / linework, fixups and coverups, and collaborative pieces with Nick.
In Shakira's words
My name is Shakira. For as long as I can remember, I've used art as a voice for my soul.
Growing up I always found it difficult to express how I felt through words. Through constant experimentation through my years, I somehow was able to form a language with myself through different forms of art — using different elements to convert a simple thought into a visual story.
Today I practice this connection through mainly my tattoos but also through writing, body movement, sitting still in silence — using whatever form of expression I feel called to to let out an expression, a part of my soul that wants to be free.
I hope that in your search through my work, in whatever it may be you are looking for, that you find a sense of connection to the universe, to your self. I hope my art can make you feel something.
